Scarce Six-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M. WOODRUFF / CORTLAND," NY State origin, circa 1867-1869, large-sized, cylindrical jug with tooled shoulder, semi-squared spout, and open strap handles applied at the shoulder. Brush-decorated on the front with two flowers emanating from a stem with scrolled leaves, one blossom accented with spots on its interior. Reverse decorated with a single flower featuring wreath-like leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Left handle broken into three pieces and reglued. A tiny nick to opposite handle. A shallow 1 1/8" chip to top of spout. A small in-the-firing surface chip (contact mark) to front. A 1 3/4" U-shaped, in-the-firing surface fissure to underside. Some light staining. H 17 3/4".
