Extremely Rare Stoneware Gemel with Applied Eagle Motifs and Incised Decorations, Impressed Four Times "JACOB CONE /NEW HAVEN," CT origin, circa 1850, connected small-sized, ovoid jugs with semi-squared spouts, the shoulder of each jug decorated with a molded spread-winged eagle with excellent feather detail. Bodies of jugs decorated with incised leaf and floral designs. Impressed twice on each jug, "JACOB CONE / NEW-HAVEN." Cone is a previously-undocumented potter active in New Haven, CT, circa 1850. Surface covered in a mottled Albany slip glaze. While a number of earlier New Haven stoneware gemels have surfaced, this example is the first we have seen incorporating eagles into the decoration. An exceptional example. Professionally restored handle. Two small scratched areas to reverse. Some scratches to right of incised decoration on right gemel, visible when held in the light. In-the-firing separation on underside, continuing 3/4" onto base. A small restored spout chip on reverse. Small base chip on reverse. H 6 3/4".
