Extremely Rare Open-Handled Redware Jar with Profuse Two-Color Slip Decoration, attributed to Christian Klinker, Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, PA, circa 1773-1798, ovoid jar with footed base, semi-rounded rim, and distinctive open handles with crimped edges. Circumference of jar lavishly-decorated with alternating upswept swags of slip-trailed copper and cream-colored slip. Rim decorated with vertical stripes of cream-colored slip. Exterior and interior surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Among the most heavily-decorated American redware jars that we have seen, this work is also noteworthy for the extraordinary condition it survives in, rarely seen in 18th century American redware. Its ornamental crimped handles can be seen in a related jar bearing the slip date "1787," in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Featuring outstanding form, desirable origin, and striking decoration and color, this work is among the most important 18th century American redware jars to come to auction in recent years. Excellent condition. Some expected minor wear to slip. Rim with three small chips and minor wear. A 1" surface line to interior of rim, not visible on exterior.
