Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "BENNINGTON / FACTORY," Captain John Norton, Bennington, VT, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with applied lug handles, decorated with a freehand-script "2" and cobalt highlights to the maker's mark and capacity mark. Some bubbling to cobalt. Traces of old red paint to surface. A small chip to one handle. Three small chips to interior of rim. Minor wear to inner rim for lid. A few minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. A faint 1 3/4" Y-shaped surface line to side of jar near base, not visible on interior. A shallow, approximately 7/8" in-the-firing base flake. H 12 1/2".
