Scarce Three-Gallon Cobalt-and-Iron-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Impressed Fish Motif, Frederick Carpenter, Charlestown, MA, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, open loop handles, and tall collar with semi-squared rim, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a fish. Iron-oxide coating to interior with additional traces of iron-oxide to rim and tops of handles. Lighter dipped iron-oxide decoration to base. Rim chips. A 2 1/4" x approx. 3/4" surface flake near base on front. Minor scattered exfoliation above. Some typical in-the-firing flaws to surface, including a 3/4" in-the-firing surface flake to midsection below left handle. Two base chips. Light exfoliation to underside. H 13".
