Scarce Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," New York State origin, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, narrow opening, and applied lug handles with original piercings to allow for a metal bail handle. Decorated with a slip-trailed design of two birds perched on a flowering plant. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable size, form, and decoration. Fry to cobalt. A tight 9" crack from rim on side of jar. A small horizontal V-shaped surface line to rim on reverse. Two in-the-firing iron pings on reverse. H 16 3/4".
