Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, NJ or Manhattan, NY, circa 1745-1780, ovoid jug with distinctive tooled spout, decorated with a central slip-trailed cobalt watch spring motif flanked by two additional X-shaped watchspring designs. Wavy slip-trailed cobalt line decoration to base of handle. Cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal. The decoration and form of this jug are consistent with 18th century pieces produced at the Captain James Morgan pottery of Cheesequake, NJ, the Kemple pottery of Ringoes, NJ, and the earliest Crolius and Remmey potteries of Manhattan, NY. Featuring a desirable small size, elaborate decoration, and exceptional color, this work is one of the finest watchspring-decorated jugs that we have ever offered. Thin cracks in underside, one of which extends several inches up right side of jug's front. A 1 3/8" flake to underside at jug's edge, along with a few base chips. H 9 1/2".
