Fine Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, attributed to Lewis Miles' Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1840-1860, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a dark-brown alkaline glaze overlain with olive-colored runs. Incised with six small slash marks and a horseshoe at the shoulder. Dynamic glaze and appealing large size. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Excellent condition with minor in-the-firing flaws to surface, a hairline across underside, a shallow, 3 3/8" in-the-firing flake to bottom edge, and tiny base chips. H 16 1/2".
