Very Rare Four-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "N RAMEY & CO.," Pottersville, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1839, ovoid jar with rounded rim and applied tab handles, the surface covered in a light, gray-green alkaline glaze. Body of jar embellished with numerous circumferential incised lines. Shoulder impressed with "N RAMEY & CO." stamp, used during the involvement of merchant, Nathaniel Ramey, at the Pottersville Pottery. Few pieces bearing this mark are known. Literature: Illustrated in Baldwin, Great and Noble Jar, p. 38, plate 2. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Excellent condition. A 3 3/4" vertical hairline at base on front. A 1 1/2" surface crack to top of left handle. Some very minor wear to interior of rim. H 16".
