Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Profuse Freehand Decoration, attributed to William "Leet" Hamilton, Greensboro, PA, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooling to midsection and shoulder, lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with large freehand vine and stripe motifs. Base with cobalt-script "4" flanked by dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year private collection. A vertical crack from rim, extending across underside with a second crack running horizontally, indicating there is a very large reglued section. A thin 5" crack from rim on reverse. Two chips to interior of rim. Chips to shoulder molding. A small chip to one handle. Staining to surface. H 12 5/8".
