Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL," Winchester or Strasburg, VA, circa 1845, ovoid form with flaring collar and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with three hanging flowers interspersed with leafy brushwork. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with early "SOLOMON BELL" maker's mark under one handle, used before the addition of the town name, Strasburg, Virginia, to the stamp. Large section of one handle missing. One handle chip and some rim chips. Cracks on underside, which continue several inches up base of jar. An 8" line from rim. H 12".
