Exceptional Sixteen-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "R.T. WILLIAMS / NEW GENEVA, PA," circa 1880, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring a highly unusual zig-zagging freehand band between freehand stripes. R.T. Williams maker's stenciling below, flanked by stenciled tulips and graduated freehand dashes. Base inscribed with a freehand "16," flanked by additional graduated dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The first Western Pennsylvania piece decorated in this manner that we have offered. Excellent condition with three small chips to shoulder molding on front, a small chip to one handle, and some minor surface wear. H 23 1/2".
