Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1880, domed form with applied watering trough, pointed finial, and extruded lug handles, decorated with brushed tulips flanking the trough and a single tulip along the trough's base, as well as large tulip and swag decorations on the reverse and below each handle. Additional swag decoration to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals along with a wavy line of cobalt directly below each handle. Impressed with a cobalt-highlighted cross motif at the shoulder above the number "2," denoting two gallons. Among the largest and most elaborately decorated stoneware chicken waterers that we have offered. Tight cracks throughout top half of waterer. A tight Y-shaped crack in underside. H 15 3/4".
