Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Chicken Pecking Corn Decoration, Ohio origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jug with flared spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a strutting chicken with large comb and upswept tail, facing a cluster of corn kernels. Freehand "3" to shoulder. While popular among the Northeastern potteries, the chicken pecking corn motif is rarely seen in the work of Midwestern stoneware manufactories. This rendering, measuring an impressive 7 3/4" tall, has a wonderful folk art quality, evident in the heavily-brushed form and wild, hair-like comb of the bird, as well as the haphazard spotting of kernels. Excellent condition with a small 3/4" in-the-firing flake to spout on reverse and two minor base chips on reverse, one of which is glazed over. H 13 1/2".
