Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Incised Figural Decorations, OH origin, circa 1840, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout molding, decorated on one side with an incised design of a standing woman with well-detailed dress and hands placed on her hips. The initials, "UFF," with the "U" impressed upside-down appear to the right of the figure. An additional impressed circular design of U's and F's appears further around the jug's shoulder. Also incised is a simplistic profile of a man's face, a smaller design of a woman or girl that was partially scratched away by the potter prior to firing, a large tree including impressed U's and F's, and a standing horse with saddle. A three-gallon capacity mark appears below the spout. Underside with old, partially legible crayon inscription stating that the jug was bought in Ohio. An excellent example of Midwestern incised decoration with a strong folk aesthetic. Very nice condition with a 3/4" spout chip and some small in-the-firing surface flaws. H 16 1/4".
