Outstanding Large-Sized Stoneware Cooler with Applied and Incised Decorations, Stamped "I. SEYMOUR / TROY," NY State origin, circa 1830, approximately five-gallon, ovoid cooler with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and circular bunghole, decorated on the front with a molded and applied design on a pedestal-based urn bearing fruit and leafy branches, underscored by an incised foliate motif based on the Manhattan style. Further decorated at the shoulder with incised floral or rising sun motifs, accented with impressed circles and flanking the maker's mark. Applied and incised decorations and maker's mark highlighted in cobalt slip. Rare form and decoration for this maker. Various lines throughout cooler, most of which are faint and in-the-firing, including a 5 1/2" star-shaped spider line to left side of jar's front, not visible on interior. Scattered exfoliation to base area. Rim chips. A tiny nick to edge of applied urn motif. H 15".
