Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Kaolin Slip Inscription, "C. Rhodes / Maker," Collin Rhodes, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a kaolin-slip wreath surrounding the signature, "C. Rhodes / Maker." Slip-trailed "2" above within a stylized flower blossom. Surface coated in a mottled, light-to-dark-olive alkaline glaze. The majority of surviving pieces produced at Rhodes' pottery are unsigned. Those bearing a Rhodes signature remain some of the most sought-after works from the Edgefield potting tradition. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. A large oval section of the front of the jug extending onto left side of jug is tightly reglued, with coloring along the crack of the reglued section. This damage includes a long curving crack descending from the shoulder and curving onto the right side of the jug. Spout tightly reglued. H 13 1/2".
