Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Rabbit Decoration, attributed to "J.C. WAELDE. / NORTH.BAY," NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with tapered shoulder and thick spout, decorated with a stenciled design of a rabbit, applied with a sponge. Decoration includes sponged bushes to the left and right and a sponged ground below the animal, underscored by a series of slip-trailed spots. Slip-trailed "2" above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. The rabbit is among the rarest and most desirable Waelde animal motifs known, and this example is the finest that we have seen. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. Very nice condition with some tight vertical lines to base, a few tight lines to underside, a 1" base chip to side of jug, and some staining. H 14 1/2".
