Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with New York City Advertising, attributed to the Hudson River Pottery, Manhattan, NY, circa 1850's, semi-ovoid jug with flared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a tulip, accented with spots. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "RICHARD RAYNOR / NO 332 MONROE ST NY." Raynor appears from 1850-1856 in New York City directories as a grocer and liquor dealer at this address; his shop was located at the "foot of Monroe street, near the Williamsburg Ferry." The Hudson River Pottery, located on West 12th Street in Manhattan, would later be purchased and operated by the more-well-known Lewis Lehman and William Macquoid. Excellent condition with possible staining of clay from use as a molasses jug. H 14 1/2".
