Rare Sixteen-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Pomeroy, OH Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1880, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "J.A. FRANZ & SON / STAPLE & FANCY GROCERIES / POMEROY, OH.," surrounded by finely stenciled floral and garland motifs. Decorated above and below with freehand vine motifs. Cobalt stripe decoration below rim and at base. Stenciled "10" with flourishes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in New York State. Excellent condition with three chips to interior of rim, some light surface wear, and an in-the-firing separation to underside, not visible on interior. H 23 1/4".
