Rare Shenandoah Valley Glazed Redware Sugar Bowl with Bird-Finialed Lid, Stamped "BAECHER / WINCHESTER," Anthony Bacher, Winchester, VA, circa 1880, ovoid form with footed base, tooled rim, and applied loop handles, the lid with hand-modeled and applied bird finial with incised details to bird, incised legs, and leaf in bird's beak. Surface of sugar bowl and lid glazed in the distinctive Bacher style, with cream-colored slip and spattered manganese decoration under a clear lead glaze. Underside of bowl impressed "BAECHER / WINCHESTER." Among the most iconic Shenandoah Valley folk pottery forms, this sugar bowl is the first signed Bacher example with bird finial to come to auction in many years. The addition of a leaf in the bird's beak is a highly unusual treatment. Strong condition for form by Bacher. Glaze loss to head of bird. Loss to leaf in bird's beak. Expected minor wear to rim of bowl and edge of lid. H (to top of finial) 5 3/4".
