Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Snake" Decoration, Stamped Twice "N. COOPER & POWER. / MAYSVILLE. / KY.," attributed to Henry K. Atchison, New Geneva, PA, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with semi-rounded rim and tooling to midsection and shoulder, decorated with two brushed "snake" motifs flanking a large script "2." Impressed above with the semi-circular, cobalt-highlighted maker's mark, "N. COOPER & POWER. / MAYSVILLE. KY." Reverse impressed "N. COOPER & POWER. / MAYSVILLE . KY" above a two-gallon capacity mark. A fine example of Western Pennsylvania stoneware made for the Kentucky market, featuring Atchison's desirable "snake" motif, typically found on his canning jars. A 2 3/4" loss to rim. Crack across underside, which forms a Y at the shoulder on reverse. Light surface wear.
