Rare and Fine Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Floral Decoration, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, boldly-decorated across the front and sides with nine large freehand flower blossoms. Stenciled "5" at base. Cobalt stripe below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the most profusely-decorated examples of Palatine stoneware that we have seen. Some wear to surface, rim, handles, and underside. A glazed-over chip to one handle and a small chip to opposite handle.
