Very Rare Stoneware Canning Jar with Incised Pottery Order, Western PA origin, circa 1875, tapered jar with rounded "wax sealer" rim, decorated with straight and wavy freehand stripes and incised vertically across the front, "Turn / 3-2 gal. Jugs S.V. Balmart," underscored by incised flourishes. The jar's order recipient, S.V. Balmart, likely refers to Simon Balmert, who, according to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, was born in Hesse, Germany in 1849 and worked as a "liquor merchant" in Portsmouth, Ohio. Cobalt-stenciled stoneware featuring advertising for Balmert's Portsmouth shop are known. Inner wax sealer rim with a 1 1/4" flake and small flake. Two rim chips on reverse, measuring 3/4" and 5/8". H 8".
