Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "T J S," Thomas J. Suttle, Perryopolis, PA, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, applied lug handles, and unusual dentile coggling to midsection. Front decorated with a large triple-stemmed tulip plant below the stenciled initials, "T J S," for potter, Thomas J. Suttle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar is the first example of Suttle's work that we have seen bearing his stenciled initials. A highly-decorative and exceptionally rare example of Fayette County, Pennsylvania stoneware. Provenance: From a fifty-year collection. Very nice condition with some surface lines to shoulder on reverse, a long, faint surface line to base, and a few other minor surface lines, all of which do not extend through to the interior and likely occurred in the firing. A 1 1/4" rim chip on side of jar. A few salt drips to body.
