Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Churn with Incised Signature, Stamped "J.S. Penland," Buncombe County, NC, late 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with arched handles and tooling at base of collar, the surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze. Impressed with the maker's mark of Joseph Sylvester Penland below one handle. Additionally incised at base with the faint script signature, "J.S. Penland," a highly unusual treatment. An approximately 11 1/2" diagonal crack from rim. A 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" restored section at rim. H 18".
