Extremely Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Chicken Waterer with Large Cobalt Floral Design, attributed to R.J. Grier, Chester County, PA, circa 1875, beehive form with pointed finial and applied semi-circular watering trough at base. Front and back decorated with a large brushed cobalt flower extending from a heavily-leafed stem. Trough decorated with brushed foliate devices and highlights where it meets the body of the vessel. Few Grier chicken waterers are known. Watering trough broken into pieces and reglued. Otherwise excellent condition with a varnish-coated surface. H 11 3/4".
