Small-Sized Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Clover Decoration and Impressed Star, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1875, vasiform pitcher with footed base and flared collar with semi-squred rim, decorated with split-stemmed clover motif extending up the front. Collar decorated with four horizontal clovers. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse impressed with the mysterious "Baltimore star," possibly used to denote the work of a potter who earned his wages by the piece. Of note is the pitcher's intriguing swirled clay body, produced by mixing different clays on the wheel and possibly intentional, reminiscent of pieces produced in North Carolina during the 20th century. Very nice condition with crazing to underside, extending a short distance onto base, and a minor 5/8" line to spout. H 6 3/4".
