Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Lid, Stamped "CLARK & FOX / ATHENS," NY State origin, circa 1835, highly-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and unusual wavy incising to rim, decorated on the front with a slip-trailed, wreath-shaped floral motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Included with this lot is a fitting, domed-shaped lid, possibly original to the jar, well-decorated with brushed cobalt X's. Jar with a small restored chip to each handle, restoration to an in-the-firing contact mark to left of decoration, a 1 3/4" hairline from rim on front, a very faint 2" line from rim on reverse, a 5" horizontal hairline at base on front, some staining, and minor chipping to rim and shoulder molding. Lid with some in-the-firing fissures at base of knob, chips to flange on underside and a restored 1 1/4" chip to edge, mostly visible when lid is turned over.
