Fine George Ohr Pottery Vase, Stamped "G.E. OHR / Biloxi, Miss.," late 19th century, ovoid form with footed base and partially-scalloped rim, one side with heavy dimpling and deeply-impressed indentation, the surface covered in a brown-speckled glaze. Underside impressed with George Ohr maker's mark. An extreme example of Ohr's manipulation of the clay, this vase relates to the potter's dualist approach seen in much of his work. Just as some pieces are decorated with different colors or patterns on two different sides, this vase follows a traditional form on one side and an abstract, tortured contour on the other. Viewed from one side, the vase appears "normal." From the other, it looks bizarre. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Pennsylvania. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 4 5/8".
