Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "R. SEYMOUR / TROY", New York State origin, circa 1830, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched on a stylized leaf, underscored by a brushed foliate device resembling a dragonfly. The bird's oversized eye is composed of a small impressed circle with larger, hand-incised circle around it. Brushed floral motifs appear to the bird's left and right. Cobalt slip highlights the maker's mark and handle terminals. flanked by two brushed tulip motifs. Reverse with lightly-brushed cobalt looping line flourish with cross-hatched interior. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jar is only the second piece we have offered bearing the maker's mark, "R. SEYMOUR / TROY", which may have been modified from an Israel Seymour stamp, as the letter R is raised higher than the word "SEYMOUR". Literature: A related work is discussed in Broderick and Bouck. Pottery Works: Potteries of New York State's Capital District and Upper Hudson Region. London and Toronto. Associate University Presses, 1995, p. 138. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A spider crack to reverse end of left handle. Small chips and wear to interior of rim and inner rim for lid.
