Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Fish Decoration, Stamped "C. BOYNTON. / TROY," NY State origin, circa 1825-1829, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a fish with heavy scaling and large, fanned tail. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Few fish designs are known by the Albany-trained potter, Calvin Boynton. When found, they are typically incised. This charming, freehand rendering, exhibiting strong color on a desirable one-gallon size, resembles a goldfish. A 2 7/8" x 1 7/8" salt glob to rim area on reverse, including a long flake and small chip. Several other small rim chips. A 3 3/4" hairline from rim on front. A 2 1/2" Y-shaped line near base below right handle. A few very short, minor surface lines at base, not visible on interior. A thin 2 1/2" crack from rim. A tiny glazed-over base chip.
