Very Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "J.H. WAGGONER / & CO / BEAVER. PA," circa 1875, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the pottery name, "J.H. WAGGONER / & CO / BEAVER. PA," within a stenciled border. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Decoration is applied over slip-coated clay. The first example of Waggoner stoneware that we have offered, featuring a stenciled eagle motif related to designs employed further south in the state. Stenciled decoration of this quality is rarely-seen on Beaver County stoneware. Literature: Illustrated in Jones, Made in Pennsylvania: A Folk Art Tradition, The Westmoreland Museum of American Art.
