Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "Four," attributed to A.P. Donaghho, Fredericktown, PA, circa 1865, semi-ovoid jar with tooled accents, semi-rounded rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front with anunusual freehand tulip plant below the inscription "Four" within a wavy cartouche. Further decorated below the rim with inverted swag motifs. Handle terminals decorated with stylized brushwork resembling flower blossoms. A fine example from this prolific potter's early years of stoneware production. Light surface wear. Chips to right handle. Hairlines and shallow chipping to left handle. An approximately 4 1/2" diagonal hairline from rim on reverse. Two minor chips to interior of rim.
