Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Freehand Decoration, Dated 1866, attributed to A.P. Donaghho, Fredericktown, PA, 1866, semi-ovoid jar with tooled accents, semi-rounded rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated on the front with freehand stripes and dashes surrounding the number "4" within a wavy cartouche and the large date "1866". Further decorated below the rim with inverted swag motifs. Handle terminals decorated with stylized brushwork resembling flower blossoms. A fine example from this prolific potter's early years of stoneware production. A glazed-over dent to right handle. A 1 1/8" chip to top of left handle and a 1" chipped area to bottom edge of left handle. A large, thin Y-shaped crack across underside. This crack forms a long "T" at the base on reverse, and continues shortly onto the base at its two other endpoints. Two in-the-firing flakes to bottom edge, measuring 2" and 1 1/2". Two pieces of adhered in-the-firing clay to front. A shallow 7/8" chip to interior of rim. Some light surface wear.
