Outstanding Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "E. FOWLER / BEAVER, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder, wide spout, and applied handles at the shoulder, decorated with a long slip-trailed looping vine design, applied over slip-coated clay. Slip-trailed "5" above. Further decorated at the shoulder with a wavy slip-trailed line. The finest example of Enoch Fowler stoneware that we have ever offered. Literature: Illustrated in Jones, Made in Pennsylvania: A Folk Art Tradition, The Westmoreland County Museum of Art. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some fry to cobalt. H 19 1/4".
