Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jar or Churn with Alkaline Glaze, Stamped "JHL," John Henry Long, Crawford County, GA, late 19th century, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, two applied strap handles, and squared rim, the surface covered in a mottled alkaline glaze with green, brown, and blackish coloration. Impressed with "JHL" maker's mark on one handle and with a five-gallon capacity mark on opposite handle. Desirable form. One handle reglued at each end, with restoration along the crack lines. A small rim chip. A restored flake on interior, which connects to a restored 1" sliver on exterior. This damage includes a 9 3/8" hairline descending from it. H 16 1/8".
