Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large fuchsia vine and freehand stripes on the jar's upper half and stripes and vining on the jar's lower half. Base of jar with freehand "5" bordered by two rows of spots, flanked by wavy stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Wonderful, top-to-bottom brushwork. A thin 10 3/4" crack extending from shoulder to base on reverse. Some light surface exfoliation to shoulder on reverse. A 2 3/4" vertical surface line to shoulder on front, not visible on interior. A few minor chips to shoulder molding. H 15 7/8".
