Exceptional Colonel Ellsworth Ironstone Presentation Pitcher, Stamped "M A P / TRENTON, NJ," Millington, Astbury, and Poulston, Trenton, NJ, circa 1863, molded pitcher depicting the murder of Union Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, labeled "COL ELLSWORTH," and the shooting of his assassin, "J W JACKSON / THE TRAITOR" by "F E BROWNELL". Reverse impressed "UNION AND CONSTITUTION" with image of an eagle holding a snake in its beak, grasping a palmetto tree and fallen Confederate flag in its talons, beside a raised American flag with rifles. Outstanding polychrome glaze decoration throughout along with gilded highlights. Front inscribed in gold, "Presented / to / G. Wittingham, / by Hebert Bourne. / Nov. 1st 1863." Underside impressed with Millington, Astbury, and Poulston maker's mark. The finest Colonel Ellworth pitcher that we have ever offered.
