Exceptional Colonel Ellsworth Ironstone Presentation Pitcher, Stamped "M A P / TRENTON, NJ," Millington, Astbury, and Poulston, Trenton, NJ, circa 1863, molded pitcher depicting the murder of Union Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, labeled "COL ELLSWORTH," and the shooting of his assassin, "J W JACKSON / THE TRAITOR" by "F E BROWNELL". Reverse impressed "UNION AND CONSTITUTION" with image of an eagle holding a snake in its beak, grasping a palmetto tree and fallen Confederate flag in its talons, beside a raised American flag with rifles. Outstanding polychrome glaze decoration throughout along with gilded highlights. Front inscribed in gold, "Presented / to / G. Wittingham, / by Hebert Bourne. / Nov. 1st 1863." Underside impressed with Millington, Astbury, and Poulston maker's mark. The finest Colonel Ellworth pitcher that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with some expected wear to gilding and minor wear to polychrome decoration. H 8 1/2".
