Fine Flint Enamel Figure of a Lion on Base, Stamped "Lyman Fenton & Co. / Fenton's / ENAMEL, / PATENTED / 1849. / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1849-1852, molded figure of a standing lion on base with heavy coleslaw mane, upswept tail, open mouth with protruding tongue, and front paw resting on a ball. Lion and ball feature mottled olive and amber decoration over a cream-colored ground. Base with mottled reddish-brown and cobalt decoration. Underside impressed with circular Lyman Fenton & Co. maker's mark, along with the worn, red-slip inscription, "No. 12 / OUAM) / Phillipsburg, NJ." (This inscription refers to the Order of United American Mechanics, centered around the patronage of only American labor and businesses.) Provenance: From a long-term Pennsylvania private collection. Two teeth restored. Minor damage to coleslaw mane. L 11 1/8" ; H 9 1/2".
