Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / STONE-WARE / MANUFACTURER / Manhattan-Wells / NEW YORK," circa 1815, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed, stylized drape motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed at shoulder with the oval maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr.. Provenance: Ex-W. Oakley Raymond Collection (includes Raymond's original label on underside); a forty-year private collection. A long, thin in-the-firing surface line, extending around most of jar's base area, with two shorter lines extending off from it. These lines are not visible on the interior. A thin 4 3/4" vertical crack extending from rim directly through terminal of one handle. Two small chips above same handle, one of which is glazed over. A 1 3/4" line and a small chip above opposite handle. Two minor chips to interior of rim.
