Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Medallion, probably Manhattan, NY origin, late 18th or early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a medallion composed of a small circle within a large circle, surrounded by numerous short rays. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year private collection. A crack extending from base to spout on reverse, additionally extending 2 1/2" onto handle. Surface wear to midsection on reverse. A minor base chip. Typical in-the-firing contact marks to surface.
