Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Epigraph Jar, Inscribed "OLD & STRONG," Stamped "BROWN BROTHERS / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.," circa 1870-1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with the large slip-trailed cobalt epigraph, "OLD & STRONG." The slogan, "OLD & STRONG," on this jar likely refers to the durability of stoneware. These words hold true, as the jar has managed to survive in good, useable condition for 140 years or so. One of a small number of epigraph pieces known from this important coastal New York pottery and regarded today as the Browns' masterworks. Provenance: A recently-discovered example. Very nice condition. An approximately 1" lime ping on reverse. A large, faint star-shaped surface line on underside, not visible on interior, which includes one line extending 1 1/2" onto base. A minor in-the-firing fissure to interior of rim, not visible on exterior.
