Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Filtering Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA origin, circa 1875, tapered cooler with circular bung hole and applied tab handles, decorated on the front with a vertically-brushed tulip emanating from a cobalt-highlighted bunghole, below two horizontal tulips. Reverse decorated with two horizontal tulips at the shoulder. Cobalt swag decoration under each handle and highlights to handle terminals. Interior with original, salt-glazed stoneware filter. Includes a loosely-fitting Remmey lid with swag decoration, likely not original to the cooler. This filtering cooler is the first of its form that we have seen in Philadelphia stoneware production. The vessel's perforated, disk-shaped filter, designed to hold charcoal, was likely based on Baltimore, Maryland models. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a forty-year PA collection. Heavy chipping to rim of cooler. Otherwise excellent condition. Lid with a 1" chip to knob and some chips to flange on underside. H (including lid) 15".
