Very Rare Copper-Glazed Redware Pitcher with Manganese Foliate Decoration, possibly WV origin, second or third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid pitcher with footed base, heavy tooling to collar, and unusual stepped midsection, the surface dipped in copper slip and decorated with brushed manganese foliate devices. Collar and spout decorated with brushed manganese. Manganese highlights to handle terminals. Interior surface covered in a clear lead glaze. This pitcher, decorated similar in style to a stoneware pitcher, features brushed foliate designs reminiscent of floral motifs found on redware produced by the Thompsons in Morgantown, WV and Samuel Butter in Clarksburg, WV. The form includes similar embellishment to the midsection and handle construction to a pitcher with distinctive glazing, sold as lot 276 in Crocker Farm's October 25, 2014 auction, the latter having a glaze closely-linked to the signed Samuel Butter jug in this auction. Exfoliation to surface, primarily on midsection/side of pitcher. Wear to rim. A chip to interior of rim. Chips to spout. Two base chips and other minor wear to base. A chip to side of handle and minor handle wear. H 9 1/2".
