Exceptional Small-Sized Stoneware Presentation Pitcher with Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "JD. Mccloy / 1881 / Palatine / WvA," Palatine, WV origin, 1881, semi-ovoid pitcher with tall collar and semi-rounded rim, featuring the cobalt-script inscription, "JD. Mccloy / 1881" on the front and the inscription, "Palatine / WvA" on the reverse. Collar decorated with wavy stripes flanking dashes along the spout. Jacob D. McCloy appears in the 1880 federal census as a shoemaker living in Palatine, on the very same page as stoneware potter W. H. Reger. A remarkable work, as relatively few pitchers and very few presentation pieces have survived from the potteries of Palatine, West Virginia. The inclusion of the town name, "Palatine / WvA," in freehand is noteworthy and the size is the smallest known among Palatine pitchers. Missing handle. Two small drill marks on reverse where a restored handle was previously attached. A 5" crack descending from spout. A 5 1/4" crack descending from rim on side of pitcher. A 3" crack from rim on reverse. A small chip to edge of spout. Some surface wear to reverse and very minor surface wear elsewhere. H 8 1/4".
