Exceptional Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to John L. Haught, Shinnston, WV, circa 1875, cylindrical churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with three bands of vining separated by wavy stripes. Base with freehand script "5," flanked and underscored by freehand dashes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable form. The distinctive style of the vining on this churn leads to a firm attribution to Shinnston, WV. An approximately 8" restored crack from rim on reverse. A 2 3/4" flake to rim on side of churn. Chips to interior of rim. A smooth, 3 5/8" in-the-firing contact mark to front. A minor nick to bottom edge of rim on front. Some surface wear. H 17 1/4".
