Colvin & Sons, Jane Lew, WV, circa 1880, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a tulip plant bearing four blossoms. Freehand cobalt "4" to shoulder and wavy freehand stripe below rim. Featuring a desirable churn form, this work has one of the most extravagant freehand decorations that we have seen on a piece of Jane Lew stoneware.
