Very Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Church Decoration, attributed to S. A. Colvin and Sons, Jane Lew, WV, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a church with cross on roof, smoking chimney, and arched windows and welcoming pastor in doorway. Slip-trailed "3" with flourishes to shoulder. The church depicted appears to be the first Jane Lew Methodist Protestant Church, of which Seymour A. Colvin was a long-time, heavily-involved member. A great example of West Virginia stoneware with wonderful subject matter. A small rim chip to reverse. A minor nick to interior of rim. A shallow 1 1/2" chip to base on reverse, probably in-the-firing. A thin 3 1/4" crack from rim on reverse. A salt drip to rim on front. A 2 1/2" in-the-firing dry spot to base on left side of crock. Some light surface wear.
