Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "KNOTTS. SWINDLER & CO / PALATINE / W. VA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring Knotts, Swindler & Co stenciling surrounding a stylized, stenciled foliate motif. Surface profusely-decorated with freehand spots in arched and horizontal patterns. Base with bold-faced stenciled "4" surrounded by a cobalt spots, flanked by spotted triangular motifs. Freehand stripe decoration below rim and at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A boldly-decorated example of Palatine, WV stoneware, utilizing an unusual and expressive spot treatment. A long, tight spider crack to left side of jar, which includes a thin crack extending onto underside. Two minor base chips. Restoration of front 3" section of left handle. An approximately 2 1/4" restored chip to front of right handle. A small Y-shaped surface line below right handle. Some surface wear. Minor nicks to bottom edge of rim.
